Ghost Plates vs 4D Plates: What’s the Difference?

Ghost plates and 4D plates get mixed up all the time. Some sellers even advertise “4D ghost plates”, and some news reports and council notices have lumped raised plates in with ghost plates. So are 4D plates the same thing, and are they legal? This guide explains the difference and how to make sure the plates on your car are the right kind.
The Quick Answer
- A 4D plate has raised, laser-cut acrylic characters. Made to BS AU 145e by a registered supplier, it is road legal and reads clearly on every camera.
- A ghost plate is made or altered so that cameras cannot read it. It is illegal, whatever style it comes in.
The difference is not how the plate looks. It is whether cameras and people can read it.
Side by Side
| Road legal 4D plate | Ghost plate | |
|---|---|---|
| Readable by cameras | Yes | No, by design |
| BS AU 145e mark | Yes | No, or faked |
| Supplier name and postcode | Yes | Usually missing |
| ID and ownership checks | Always | Usually skipped |
| Passes an MOT | Yes | No |
| Penalty | None | Up to £1,000 fine |
Why Do People Confuse Them?
Partly because of marketing. “Ghost” sounds edgy, so some sellers use it as a style name for dark or subtle plates. Partly because illegal plates often copy the 4D look to seem normal. And partly because some enforcement notices have described infrared-reflective plates as “3D”, “4D” or “ghost” plates in the same breath. The style is not the problem. A plate that hides its registration from cameras is.
When Does a 4D Plate Become Illegal?
- If a film, tint, lacquer or coating has been added that affects how it reads.
- If the characters are not solid black, or use a non-standard font, size or spacing.
- If it has no BS AU 145e mark or no supplier details.
- If it is a coloured or tinted design, which makes it a show plate for off-road use only.
Will 4D Plates Be Banned?
Not at the moment. In December 2025 a parliamentary group recommended standardising plate designs and banning raised 3D and 4D plates in future, alongside tougher action on ghost plates. That is a recommendation, not a change in the law. Today, 3D gel and 4D plates made to BS AU 145e by a DVLA-registered supplier are road legal. We will update our guides if that changes.
