Where to Buy Ghost Plates? Why No Legal Supplier Will Sell Them

If you have searched for where to buy ghost plates, or how to get them, you have probably found a mix of social media sellers, overseas websites and adverts promising plates that “cameras can’t see”. Before you spend a penny, here is what you need to know: no legitimate UK supplier can sell you a ghost plate, and buying one puts you, your car and your money at risk.
Can You Buy Ghost Plates in the UK?
Not legally. Every business that makes number plates for UK roads has to be registered with the DVLA, and every plate it makes must meet the BS AU 145e standard and be readable by cameras. A ghost plate is designed to fail that test, so a registered supplier cannot make one without breaking the law and risking its registration. That is why you will not find ghost plates at any genuine plate shop, including ours.
How Do People Get Ghost Plates?
They usually come from sellers who work outside the rules: unregistered online shops, social media accounts, marketplace listings and overseas websites. Some are sold as “show plates” or “privacy plates” to sound harmless. Others are made by adding films, sprays or covers to a normal plate. Whatever the route, the plate is illegal the moment it goes on a car that is used on the road.
The Risks of Buying Ghost Plates
- Fines and more: up to £1,000 for an illegal plate, an MOT failure, and the chance of losing a private registration. Penalty points and vehicle seizure are also being considered. See are ghost plates legal?
- Getting caught is easier than sellers claim: police and council teams use handheld infrared cameras that show a ghost plate instantly, and cars that never register on ANPR stand out.
- No comeback: sellers who break the law to make the plates are unlikely to offer refunds, returns or any protection if something goes wrong.
- Your identity: unregistered sellers skip the ID and ownership checks that protect you from having your registration cloned.
Red Flags When Buying Number Plates Online
- The seller does not ask for proof that you own the registration, or for your ID.
- There is no business name or postcode, or they will not put them on the plate.
- The listing mentions cameras, ANPR, “anti-camera”, “stealth” or “invisible”.
- They offer tinted, smoked or coated plates for road use.
- The plate has no BS AU 145e mark.
