4D Laser Cut Number Plates: 3mm vs 6mm, Gloss vs Matte

Custom 4D Gloss Black 3mm number plate

4D laser cut number plates are a popular way to give a car a sharper, more premium look while staying road legal. This guide explains how they are made, the difference between 3mm and 6mm, gloss and matte, and what to check before you buy.

What Are 4D Laser Cut Number Plates?

On a 4D plate, each character is laser cut from solid black acrylic and fixed onto a road legal plate. Because the characters are separate pieces, they stand proud of the plate with crisp, flat tops and clean edges. That is what gives 4D plates their bold, three-dimensional look, and it is different from 3D gel plates, where a clear resin dome sits over printed characters.

3mm or 6mm?

  • 3mm is the classic 4D look: a clear raised edge without being too heavy. 4D Gloss Black 3mm starts from £19.99.
  • 6mm doubles the depth for maximum stand-out, and suits larger cars and bold builds. 4D Gloss Black 6mm starts from £29.99.

Gloss or Matte?

  • Gloss black reflects the light and looks polished, a good match for glossy paintwork and chrome.
  • Matte black has no shine, for a stealth look that suits satin wraps and dark trims. 4D Matte Black 3mm starts from £22.99, and 6mm from £29.99.

Want something different? 4D Domed plates add a gel dome over the laser-cut characters, and 4D Retro plates use a classic character style.

Are 4D Laser Cut Plates Road Legal?

Yes, when they are made to the BS AU 145e standard: solid black characters in the standard font, the correct size and spacing, a reflective plate and the supplier’s name and postcode. Our guide to 4D number plate law covers the rules in detail. Coloured, neon or tinted 4D plates are show plates, for display and off-road use only.

What to Check Before You Buy

  • A registered supplier: road legal plates must come from a DVLA-registered supplier, who will ask for proof of ownership of the registration and ID.
  • The BS AU 145e mark and the supplier’s name and postcode on the plate.
  • Fixings: sticky pads give a clean finish without drilling holes in the plate.
  • Size: check your plate recess. Many cars take the standard oblong plate, but some need a short, hex, import or square plate.
